Maths Talks with Patsy Stafford

Grovelands Childcare in association with local development company, Midlands Science, welcome Dr.Patsy Stafford of Maynooth University to Grovelands Childcare, Tullamore on the evening of January 24th at 7:00pm to address staff and parents.

Young children are exposed to a wide range of mathematical concepts and skills in their day to day lives and before they enter primary school. Patsy will provide an overview of her academic earnings and experience about early childhood experiences of numeracy and the curiousity that can be a natural part of what develops into an interest in science and maths in later years. She will talk about the importance of play for maths learning and development and how that can be encouraged in pre-school pupils. She will also answer any questions you might have around this important topic.

Patsy Stafford began her career as an early years teacher and then a primary school teacher In New York City. Following her return to Ireland, she began working at Froebel College of Education, Blackrock. In 2011, in collaboration with Early Childhood Ireland (then IPPA) she developed the Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood – Teaching and Learning part- time degree course to meet the needs of those already working in the Early Childhood Education sector.

In 2013, she moved to the Froebel Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education at Maynooth University where she teaches mathematics & scientific enquiry and early childhood education modules on the Bachelor of Education and the Masters in Education courses and teaches curriculum, pedagogy and assessment and numeracy & scientific enquiry modules on the BA in Early Childhood. Patsy is on the steering committee for the LINC programme and has worked on the development and evaluation of the course.
